Tension in Edo as Armed Hoodlums Attack ADC Secretariat, Clash With Security Operatives at Oyegun’s Residence

There was palpable tension in Edo State following a reported clash between suspected armed hoodlums and security operatives during and after a political event involving leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The incident reportedly began shortly after a political gathering at the ADC Edo State Secretariat, where former presidential candidate Peter Obi was present for an occasion that featured the declaration of Labour Party’s Edo State governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, into the ADC.

According to eyewitness accounts, unidentified masked men, described as armed and riding motorcycles, allegedly stormed the vicinity of the secretariat shortly after the event had concluded and most party leaders, along with security personnel, had departed the premises.

Attack at Oyegun’s Residence

The situation reportedly escalated when the hoodlums proceeded to the residence of former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the national leader of ADC respected political leader, John Odigie-Oyegun, who was said to be hosting Peter Obi at the time.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the attackers opened fire at vehicles parked along the roadside outside the compound. Security operatives, including personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force, reportedly responded with gunfire, forcing the attackers to flee the scene on motorcycles.

No official casualty figures had been confirmed at the time of this report, and the extent of damage to vehicles or property remains unclear.

Allegations of Political Intimidation

Some witnesses suggested that the attack may not be unconnected with rising political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections. An eyewitness, who spoke under anonymity, alleged that the incident could be linked to political intimidation targeted at opposition figures.

However, as of press time, there has been no official statement from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) regarding the allegations.

ADC Raises Concerns Over Security

The Edo State chapter of the ADC expressed concern over what it described as increasing threats and harassment against its members. Party officials stated that the safety and security of their members would henceforth be treated as a top priority.

In a statement, the party called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and bring perpetrators to justice. The ADC also urged members of the public not to be intimidated and encouraged citizens to participate actively in the democratic process.

Heightened Political Atmosphere

Political observers note that Edo State has become a significant battleground in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape. With shifting party alignments and high-profile defections, tensions appear to be mounting as various political actors reposition ahead of future elections.

Security agencies are yet to release an official detailed briefing on the incident.
