Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, award winning Nigerian writer, says president Muhammadu Buhari wasted the chance to make “real reforms” in the early days of his administration.a

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, award winning Nigerian writer, says president Muhammadu Buhari wasted the chance to make “real reforms” in the early days of his administration. In an article written for the New York Times, Adichie said Buhari’s outdated economic ideology and the seemingly selective corruption war had led to a “declining hope” in his government. She noted that Buhari had, in many situations, appeared disengaged, saying his “tone and demeanour” were reminiscent of 1984 when he was a military head of state. Adicihie wrote: “For the first weeks of his presidency, it was said that civil servants who were often absent from work suddenly appeared every day, on time, and that police officers and customs officials stopped demanding bribes. He had an opportunity to make real reforms early on, to boldly reshape Nigeria’s path. He wasted it. “Perhaps the first clue was the unusually long time it took him to appoint his ministers. After an ostensible search for the very best, he ...

Image
Nigeria’s Federal Government has admitted recalling a dismissed civil servant and former chairman of the defunct Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina. The recall of Maina, who was sacked for alleged fraud and still has a pending corruption trial, may have opened another window for some Nigerians who have continued to pick holes in the anti-corruption fight of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. This is especially as the Nigerian government only admitted recalling Maina after a report by an online portal revealed that the former civil servant sacked for alleged corruption has been recalled by the Federal Government. The reports had claimed that Buhari’s government secretly recalled Maina, who was in 2013 declared wanted by Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and promoted him to head a directorate in the Ministry of Interior. The lawyer is praying the court to declare as unconstitutional, what he termed President Buhari’s unilateral approval of appointments or any form of re-organisation in the NNPC without input from, and consideration by the corporation’s board. Other defendants in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/990/2017 are the GMD of the NNPC, Baru, the NNPC ...

Image
The efforts by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe to extricate himself as one of the sureties of the leader of the recently proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group, Nnamdi Kanu, may have hit another brick-wall. This is as the Federal Government has filed a counter-affidavit insisting Kanu is in the senator’s custody. On October 17, co-defendants with Kanu, who are being prosecuted on charges of treasonable felony along him were produced in court by prison officials while the IPOB leader was absent. Abaribe, who was one of his three sureties had then through his lawyer, Ogechi Ogunna, informed the court of his motion seeking to withdraw as Kanu’s surety. The presiding judge in the matter, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court Abuja, had however said that she was not going to hear the motion until Abaribe first produced the missing defendant. But the Federal Government in reply to Abaribe’s application filed a counter-affidavit and written address before the Feder...

The face-off between Senator Buruji Kashamu, who represents Ogun East senatorial district at the Senate, and a former governor of the state, Gbenga Daniel, appear to be getting messier with both accusing each other of corruption. Kashamu in a statement in Abuja on Sunday said that the former governor’s ambition to become the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairman was nothing but “a mockery of democracy and assault on the anti-corruption war.” Describing Daniel’s statement while declaring his chairmanship ambition that the best way to fight corruption was not to punish those found culpable, Kashamu called on the Ogun State government and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to quicken action on Daniel’s corruption case. According to him, Daniel by his statement was making a mockery of the Federal Government’s anti-corruption war.
