World of Guns - Hand Guns

Image
Starting from today this site is going to do a serial on guns and the history of guns.Connoisseurs can research to their hearts fill. What is the modern handgun? Why is this piece of crafted metal and (recently) hard plastics still in great demand not only in military forces and police departments ALL around the world? The answers are: They are small, lightweight (well, most of them :-) and provide good firepower; suitable, not only for defensive situations, but for offensive ones, and even for medium game hunting. Of course, for each situation, careful choice of the proper handgun and ammunition must be made. Handguns are divided into a few classes: semi-autos (or pistols), revolvers, and non-autos (single or multibarreled, single-shot or magazine fed) Semi-Autos   use part of the energy produced by burning cartridge powder to remove the used cartridge from the chamber, cock the hammer (or striker) and load a new cartridge in the chamber, so the pistol will be ready for...

Obituary of a political party

Image
It was only those who lacked prescience in the heady days of the campaigns for the 2015 elections that failed to realise that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was a contraption waiting to unravel. All that was needed was the appropriate time for the party to suffer an implosion and disrupt its self-valourisation for being different from the much-pilloried People’s Democratic Party (PDP). And now in less than two years after assuming power, the party is in the grip of crises from which recovery may not be possible. This should have been expected in so far as the APC grew out of a myriad of crises of other parties. These crises have continued to haunt the APC in a way that has rendered its performance since its emergence less than stellar. Of course, no one makes the case that the existence of conflicting interests is aberrant in a democracy with its attendant plurality of perspectives. One moment of such a contest of interests that culminated in discontent was the ques...

Protests as INEC declares Obaseki winner

Image
The Returning Officer and Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, declared Obaseki the winner of the election at about 4.08 pm amid tight security. The APC candidate polled 319,483 votes to defeat Ize-Iyamu of the PDP, who scored 253,173 votes in the election. Soremekun said Obaseki “having satisfied the requirement of the law, scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.” The announcement of the results was, however, not without a drama. Soremekun fought off stiff resistance from the PDP’s State Agent, Mr. Chris Agbonwanegbe, who refused to sign the final result sheet. Agbonwanegbe had, during the collation of results, demanded the cancellation of the election. When called to sign the final results, he protested that the results were “rehearsed and produced.” The submission jolted Soremekun, who could not hide his shock. Agbonwanegbe said, “Mr. Chairman, please don’t ...

OSHIOMHOLE LIKES LISTENING TO HIMSELF —LUCKY IGBINEDION

Image
Former Edo State governor, Lucky Igbinedion, has disclosed that he declined to react to the accusations leveled against him by Governor Adams Oshiomhole because he did not believe in calling people names and that he had an upbringing that was different from that of the governor. The ex-governor, who spoke with journalists in Benin, accused Governor Oshiomhole of using propaganda to spread falsehood and discredit his government, pointing out that his administration performed better that the Oshiomhole’s administration “in terms of kobo to kobo and project to project.” He said despite efforts to cover up the achievements of his government, it was on record that the state government was not owing any bank when he left office in 2007, regretting that the state now owes over $200 million and unspecified billions of naira. He said, “Today, the state is owing over $200 million and I do not know how many billions of naira inclusive. When I left office in 2007, I was not ow...

The Zamfara State Killing Field

Image
Nigeria is currently engulfed in a major crisis of intergroup relations that is rooted in the politics of economic survival but which is often easily exploited by the elite. The latest theatre of such madness is in the Northwest state of Zamfara where towns and villages are attacked, almost on a daily basis, by armed bandits while the vigilante groups brought in by the helpless communities to help restore order are either being exterminated or are themselves engaging in extra judicial killings. With villages being deserted and a growing resort to self-help in the face of what looks like organized crime, there are serious threats to our national economy and security that many Nigerians are not paying adequate attention to. The violence in Zamfara State is particularly difficult for “outsiders” to understand, especially when the people many of us had always assumed to be one and the same are now killing one another. That perhaps explains why most of the reportage of the or...

Edo 2016: How Edo Women and Girls Can Use the Power of their Voters’ Card to Secure a Better Future

Image
very four years, we get a chance to elect a new government and for Edo State, that time has come again, though the date has been changed to September 28, 2016. Many political parties have been on the airwaves and the streets of Edo State campaigning and canvassing for your votes. This is so, because women and girls make up almost half of all eligible voters, who are registered in Edo State, therefore, the power to determine the next government of Edo State lies in your hands. So my question to all Edo women and girls is, what do you plan to do with that power? What do you plan to do with your individual and collective votes? I know that thousands of Edo women and girls have registered to vote, and I congratulate you for taking that first step towards performing your civic duty, because by participating in the electoral process and exercising the right to vote, women and girls become active participants in shaping what really affects their daily lives. The next quest...

Naira Falls to N436/$ on Parallel Market as Dollar Scarcity Worsens

Image
The naira fell to an all-time low of N436 to the dollar on the parallel market yesterday, as against N428 to the dollar from the previous day, as the perennial scarcity of the greenback in the market took a turn for the worse. The effect of the dollar shortage was also felt on the interbank FX market where the spot rate of the naira also depreciated to N313.07 to the dollar thursday, from N310.08 to a dollar the previous day. This is just as Nigeria’s external reserves fell further to $24.759 billion as of September 21, 2016. The situation on the parallel market was attributed to the refusal by banks to sell dollars to Bureau de Change (BDC) operators. The President, Association of Bureau de Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), Mr. Aminu Gwadabe, said none of his members were able to access dollars from banks as directed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). “As I speak to you, no BDC has been able to access FX since Monday. It is very unfortunate that the l...
