Cowardly Night Attack on ADC Secretariat Exposes Desperation of Political Oppressors in Edo State

Benin City, Edo State — In a brazen and disgraceful act of political violence, unknown masked men on Tuesday night attacked the newly opened African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat in Benin City, Edo State, in what has been widely condemned as a desperate attempt to intimidate a fast-rising opposition party.
The attack took place at about 9:00 p.m., carefully timed when the party office was empty—an act that clearly exposes the cowardice of the perpetrators. The assailants vandalised the premises by pulling down poles bearing ADC flags and attempted, unsuccessfully, to set the building ablaze. Their plan to destroy the secretariat failed only because the structure could not easily catch fire.
Alert residents in the area quickly raised an alarm and mobilised in defence of the ADC secretariat, forcing the attackers to flee in shame. The vandals escaped only because of the swift intervention of concerned citizens who refused to allow political thuggery to take root in their community.
Security agencies responded with commendable speed. The Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and later the Nigerian Army arrived at the scene within minutes, effectively restoring calm and securing the premises. Investigations have since commenced, with credible eyewitness accounts already in the possession of law enforcement authorities.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the attackers arrived in a grey Toyota Vannette (Hiace) bus, about five in number, and were openly chanting party slogans during the attack—an act that strongly suggests political sponsorship rather than a random criminal operation.
Many Edo residents have described the attack as a direct consequence of the deep frustration gripping the ruling political establishment, alarmed by the explosive growth and grassroots acceptance of the ADC across the state. According to concerned citizens, the incident reflects a dangerous obsession by certain political actors to impose a one-party state on Nigeria, silencing opposition through violence after failing at the ballot and in public opinion.
Observers argue that the desperation is further fueled by unrealistic political promises and grandstanding ahead of the 2027 general elections, including controversial claims of delivering millions of votes through intimidation rather than popular support.
The attack has triggered widespread outrage, with calls on security agencies to move beyond routine investigations and decisively expose, arrest, and prosecute both the foot soldiers and their political sponsors. Failure to do so, analysts warn, could embolden further attacks, provoke reprisals, and push Edo State toward political chaos, insecurity, and breakdown of democratic order.
“This is not just an attack on ADC; it is an attack on democracy itself,” a party leader stated. “If these criminals are allowed to walk free, the consequences will be grave for peace, lives, and property in Edo State.”
ADC members have vowed that intimidation, arson, and political violence will not deter the party’s march or silence the voice of Edo people, insisting that no amount of thuggery can stop a movement whose time has come.
